Wimpy Paladin

My Paladin has died twice now from farming Barbarian vills. There has been no troops inside. I've sent 300 troops along with Paladin equipped with spear wepeon and the Paladin is the the only that dies? If the wall is a problem I would have thought the the troops at least one of them would die before my paladin?

I have also noticed this problem. I lost my 3rd Paladin today. In another thread someone noted that they lost their Rams if they sent them with defensive units, but not when they sent with offensive units. The Paladin I lost today was traveling with Spearmen, so perhaps there is something about the troop type.
