I reckon just a plain and simple sidebar list that states what happens and when. I hear the noises for notifications but can't for the life of me rememeber what it was for.
Example.
Troops attacking (insert name here) have returned.
The (Insert building) was completed in (VillageName(+either points or the coords)).
The (time)hr recruitment queue for (Number of (Unit type here)) .
(If there are offensive units/rams, then Offensive/Farming) Troops have attacked a village (with or without) casualties.
Just short messages with bits of information would be great. Timestamps toooo.
